Driver Faces Felony Charges After Fatal Crash on U.S. 60 in Mesa
MESA, AZ (September 16, 2026)— One person died, and another suffered serious injuries after a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 60 in Mesa early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Officials said a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Queen Creek resident Zachary Penrod left U.S. 60 and struck two vehicles that had stopped off the highway.
The collision killed one person and seriously injured another.
Authorities later arrested Penrod in connection with the crash. He made his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon and faces four felony charges.
During the hearing, prosecutors alleged that Penrod had consumed multiple beers at a bar before getting behind the wheel. They further alleged that he was impaired when he entered the highway, failed to maintain his lane, and caused the multi-vehicle collision.
“This is not an accident. This is a collision,” a prosecutor told the court while describing the state’s allegations.
The judge set Penrod’s bail at $10,000 cash only.
Penrod’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 22.
The criminal case remains pending, and the charges are allegations. Penrod is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Sweet Lawyers extends our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.
Lost a Loved One in a Mesa DUI-Related Crash? Compassionate Legal Support Is Available
A fatal traffic collision can change a family’s life in an instant.
Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the person who died in this Mesa crash, as well as with the individual who suffered serious injuries and everyone else affected by the incident.
When authorities allege that alcohol impairment contributed to a fatal crash, surviving family members may face both a criminal case and separate questions about their own legal rights.
These processes serve different purposes. A criminal prosecution focuses on whether the accused committed an offense, while a potential wrongful death or personal injury claim generally addresses the losses suffered by victims and their families.
At Sweet Lawyers, we understand that families dealing with a sudden death often need clear information during an emotionally overwhelming period.
Our team assists individuals and families affected by serious motor vehicle collisions and wrongful death matters with compassion, professionalism, and careful attention to the circumstances surrounding each incident.
A serious crash investigation may involve reviewing police reports, toxicology evidence, witness statements, roadway conditions, surveillance footage, vehicle data, medical records, and other documentation.
When alcohol service is alleged to have occurred before a crash, additional records may also become relevant depending on the facts and applicable law.
For surviving families, the aftermath may include funeral and burial expenses, final medical costs, lost household income or financial support, insurance communications, and the emotional impact of an unexpected death.
Those seriously injured may also face hospitalization, rehabilitation, lost wages, and long-term medical needs.
Families can benefit from preserving records connected to the collision, including official reports, medical documents, insurance correspondence, photographs, and receipts for expenses related to the loss.
An experienced wrongful death attorney can review available information and explain which legal options may apply to a particular situation.
Sweet Lawyers is committed to helping families understand the process without adding unnecessary stress during an already difficult time.
Every case depends on its specific facts, and no particular result can be promised. However, knowledgeable legal guidance can help families make informed decisions while criminal and civil matters continue to develop.
