Police Investigate Deadly Crash on East Ninth Street in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (May 20, 2026) — One person died and four others, including three juveniles, suffered serious injuries in a crash on East Ninth Street Wednesday night after an SUV crashed into a parked car and a tree in northeast Kansas City.

Kansas City police said the crash happened shortly before 8:15 p.m. on East Ninth Street near Cleveland Avenue.

According to investigators, the driver of a Cadillac Escalade was speeding eastbound on Ninth Street when the SUV missed a curve, left the roadway, struck a parked car, continued forward, and then crashed into a large tree.

Police said the impact ejected the driver from the Cadillac. Emergency responders transported the driver to a hospital in critical condition.

A front-seat passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital. Police said the passenger died shortly after arriving.

Three juveniles riding in the back of the SUV were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities said all three were in stable condition.

Police reported that one juvenile is a teenager and two are under the age of 10.

Authorities have not released the identity of the passenger who died.

The Kansas City Police Department continues to investigate the crash.
