Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Interstate 40 in Ludlow

Ludlow, CA (May 29, 2025) – One person died and one other sustained injuries in a crash on Interstate 40 involving a big rig on Thursday morning.

A fatal rollover crash involving a big rig shut down eastbound Interstate 40 near Ludlow, leaving one person dead and another trapped in the wreckage.

San Bernardino County Fire reported that emergency crews responded to the incident just west of Ludlow shortly before 9:00 p.m. on May 29, 2025. 

Firefighters arrived to find an 18-wheeler tractor-truck flipped onto its side in the center divider, with smoke rising from the wreckage.

Crews confirmed one person, the driver, died at the scene. A second individual remained trapped inside the vehicle. 

Paramedic engine companies from Helendale and Baker responded after traveling more than an hour to reach the crash site. 

They worked urgently, using jaws of life equipment to rescue the surviving passenger.

Emergency teams closed all lanes to allow a Mercy Air helicopter to land. 

Once freed, the adult patient was airlifted to a regional trauma center for further treatment.

The California Highway Patrol’s Barstow office confirmed the fatality in their incident log and noted the full closure of eastbound I-40 to facilitate rescue operations. 

A heavy-duty tow truck was also requested due to the size of the overturned big rig.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver, pending notification of next of kin. 

The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the collision and urges anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
