PHOENIX, AZ (June 5, 2025) – Wednesday morning, a woman died in a horrific 2-vehicle crash on Interstate 17 near 7th Avenue.

The incident occurred at about 3:20 a.m. on southbound Interstate 17 near 7th Avenue. When the Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers arrived, they located a sedan and a pickup truck.

Reports said that a woman in a sedan crashed into the pickup truck.

A woman driving a sedan was pronounced dead at the scene following a head-on collision with a pickup truck. Authorities have not yet released her identity.

The man driving the pickup was hospitalized with serious injuries. According to DPS Cpt. Jacob Melki, the woman was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-17 when the crash occurred. It remains unclear why she was going the wrong way. Cpt. Melki noted that the man was on his way to work at the time of the incident.

The southbound lanes of I-17 were shut down at 7th Avenue during the investigation, with traffic diverted to the exit at Durango Street. A significant backup extended beyond the Durango Curve and onto I-10. The freeway reopened around 7:30 a.m.
