1 Dead in Houston Auto Accident on Westpark Tollway near South Gessner
HOUSTON, TX (July 2, 2025) – Tuesday morning, a woman died in a horrific tow truck crash on Westpark Tollway near South Gessner.
The incident occurred just before 3:00 a.m. on the Westpark Tollway at Tanglewilde, near the intersection with South Gessner.
Investigators with the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division say two vehicles were speeding, possibly racing, when one slammed into the back of a tow truck that had just entered an intersection after the light turned green. The impact pushed the tow truck through the intersection, while the speeding vehicle spun out and came to rest facing the wrong direction.
Three people were inside the speeding car. A female rear-seat passenger was taken to the hospital, where she later died. The driver remains in critical condition with multiple broken bones, and the front passenger is in stable condition. The two individuals in the tow truck were evaluated and released at the scene.
Police say the speeding driver had just left a bar, and intoxication is being investigated as a possible factor. A doctor at the hospital is conducting further evaluations.
Witness and tow truck driver Nelson Vargas said the crash happened while he and his coworker waited at the light. “We were just talking, waiting for the green light, and I saw the car coming — flying,” Vargas said. “They hit us so hard it pushed us through the intersection.”
He estimated the car’s speed at 120 to 140 mph. The vehicle nearly caught fire, but bystanders helped put out the flames. Vargas emphasized how lucky he and his coworker were to survive. “By the grace of God, we’re still here,” he said. “But unfortunately, somebody else didn’t make it.”
He urged others to think twice before speeding or street racing: “Just think about life — life is more than just a race.”
