1 Killed in Devastating Crash on State Route 138 [Phelan, CA]

Fatal Rollover Crash on State Route 138 Near SR-2 in Phelan Shuts Down Roadway

Phelan, CA (January 24, 2026) — A deadly early-morning crash on State Route 138 on Saturday.

The crash was reported at approximately 3:01 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, a four-door sedan went over the guardrail, flipped, and landed on its side beyond the barrier. 

Good Samaritans stopped to assist and attempted to reach a person trapped inside the wrecked vehicle. 

Despite their efforts and a swift response from emergency crews, at least one person was confirmed dead at the scene.

CHP requested a full closure of the eastbound lanes of SR-138 to allow safe access for first responders. 

A medical helicopter was initially called to the Stater Bros. shopping center on Phelan Road to prepare for transport, but the airlift was ultimately canceled.

By 4:10 a.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department notified the coroner’s office. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. 

CHP logs indicated two men were involved in the crash, but the condition of the second individual remains unconfirmed.

Caltrans assisted with traffic control, and the westbound lanes of Highway 138 near SR-2 were also closed for the duration of the recovery operation. 

The Victorville CHP Office continues to investigate the cause of this tragic incident.
