Police Investigate Fatal Head-On Crash on State Route 87 Near Sacaton

Sacaton, AZ (May 23, 2025) – One person died in a head-on crash on State Route 87.

A fatal head-on collision shut down State Route 87 near Sacaton for several hours on Friday evening.

Gila River police reported that the crash involved a motorcycle near the intersection of Gilbert Road. 

Officers confirmed that at least one person died in the incident, although they have not yet released information about additional injuries.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of SR 87 around 3:20 p.m. near San Tan Day School Road (milepost 154). 

They also shut down the northbound lanes near Olberg Road, diverting traffic onto Stotonic Road, then to Lower San Tan Road before rejoining SR 87. 

Crews worked at the scene for several hours, and officials reopened the highway at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Law enforcement urged drivers to avoid the area and expect significant delays while cleanup efforts continued.
