Driver Dead After Rear-End Crash on Interstate 215 in Murrieta

Murrieta, CA (June 5, 2025) – A driver died and the other sustained injuries in a rear-end crash on Interstate 215.

A van struck a stalled car on Interstate 215 in Murrieta early Thursday, killing the driver and igniting a fire that engulfed the vehicle.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m. on southbound I-215 near Clinton Keith Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). 

CHP Officer Mike Lassig reported that a 22-year-old Temecula man was driving his 2007 Chevrolet Malibu in the fast lane when he lost control and hit the center divider. 

The impact left the Malibu disabled and stalled in the No. 1 southbound lane.

The vehicle’s only passenger exited the car and moved to the center divider, while the driver remained inside and called for help.

Just a few minutes later, a Ford F-350 transit van, driven by a 61-year-old man from Moreno Valley, approached the stalled vehicle. 

He failed to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the Malibu, Lassig said. 

The collision caused the van to spin into the middle of the freeway, while flames quickly consumed the Malibu.

Murrieta Fire & Rescue crews arrived within minutes and extinguished the blaze. 

Tragically, emergency responders pronounced the Malibu driver dead at the scene. 

Authorities transported the van driver—who suffered minor injuries—to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar. 

He was the only occupant of the van. The passenger of the Malibu was unharmed.

CHP officers shut down all southbound lanes of I-215 for approximately three hours while they cleared the wreckage and conducted a preliminary investigation.
