Driver Dies in DUI Crash Near South 48th Street

Tacoma, WA (January 2, 2024) – A driver was killed in a South Orchard Street collision Wednesday afternoon.

The authorities received the crash report at 1:56 p.m. near South 48th Street, west of the Tacoma Mall.

Investigators believe that a northbound driver was speeding and attempted to overtake another vehicle. However, that driver crashed into another vehicle in the southbound lanes.

Troopers said the southbound driver was killed in the collision.

Officers suspect the southbound driver was under the influence. They said intoxicants and speed were factors in the collision.

The suspect driver is now in custody.
