Police Investigate Fatal Bicycle Crash Near Midfield Road in Marana

MARANA, AZ (August 21, 2026)— An 11-year-old boy riding a bicycle died in a crash near Midfield Road after a vehicle struck him near the Gladden Farms area in Marana on Thursday, August 20.

The Marana Police Department responded to the collision near North Midfield Road and West Hancock Drive at approximately 7:53 a.m.

According to investigators, the driver of a 2008 Ford Expedition traveled north on Midfield Road as the 11-year-old bicyclist traveled east from Hancock Drive.

The child was crossing Midfield Road in an unmarked crosswalk when the SUV struck him.

Police said the boy was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The Ford driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators have not determined what caused the crash or whether the driver was at fault. Police also said impairment does not appear to have contributed to the collision.

Sgt. Vincent Rizzi of the Marana Police Department explained that fatal crash investigations can take considerable time because officers must carefully document and map the scene while gathering evidence.

Residents who live near Midfield Road expressed concerns about traffic safety following the tragedy. Marana resident Alfredo Felix said drivers sometimes speed through the area or fail to stop at stop signs when leaving nearby neighborhoods. As a father of two young children, Felix said learning about the boy’s death was especially difficult.

The child attended Tangerine Farms K-8 as a sixth-grade student. Following the crash, the Marana Unified School District notified families and staff of his death.

School administrators expressed their condolences to the boy’s family, friends, classmates, and the broader school community. The school also said it was working with the family and providing support to students and staff grieving the unexpected loss.

The Marana Police Department continues to investigate the fatal bicycle collision.

Sweet Lawyers extends our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.
