Police Investigate Fatal Crash Near Mariposa Creek Road in Mendocino County

MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (August 30, 2026)– Two people were reportedly found dead inside an overturned vehicle down a hillside after a crash near Mariposa Creek Road and Bear Canyon Road Sunday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s Traffic Incident Information Page, a caller contacted authorities shortly before 4 p.m. on August 30 after locating a vehicle approximately 150 feet below the roadway near the 1300 block of Mariposa Creek Road.

The caller reportedly had been searching for their father when they discovered the vehicle overturned below the roadway.

Scanner traffic later indicated that two people were found deceased inside the vehicle. Authorities have not officially released their identities or confirmed the circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Reports indicated that the vehicle was resting on its roof and could not be seen from the roadway. The caller told authorities that the crash site could be accessed by a dirt road off Bear Canyon Road.

An aircrew later located the vehicle from above.

According to the CHP incident page, officials notified the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and Cal Fire about the incident.

Authorities have not yet released additional confirmed information about when the crash occurred or what may have contributed to it.

The investigation remains ongoing.
