RV Tire Blowout Leads to Fatal Crash on I-40 Near Moriarty

Moriarty, NM (July 19, 2025) On Thursday evening, 2 people were hurt and a driver was killed in a 2-vehicle crash on Interstate 40.

According to the Torrance County Sheriff Department, the deadly crash happened on westbound I-40 near Moriarty, the crash shut the highway down for several hours.

Reports say that the deadly collision involved a recreational vehicle and a semitrailer

Authorities say that the eastbound RV lost control after suffering a tire blowout. The vehicle veered off course, broke through two guardrails, and slammed into an oncoming semitrailer.

The RV driver died at the scene. Emergency crews transported two people from the semitrailer to the hospital—one in stable condition and the other in critical condition.

Authorities closed the crash site at mile marker 204, approximately eight miles east of Moriarty, while they conducted their investigation. The incident also caused delays on the eastbound side of the interstate.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed the fatality at the scene. State police, Moriarty police, and the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
