WSP Investigates Vehicle Crash near Sanderson Field
Mason County, WA (February 23, 2026) – A 57-year-old Shelton man and his 49-year-old passenger, a Port Angeles woman, were hurt in a traffic crash on Highway 101 Sunday.
It was before 4 a.m. when a northbound van on Highway 101, near Sanderson Field, left the roadway and crashed onto a ditch.
As a result, the vehicle rolled and turned onto its driver’s side.
Officers said the driver of the van fled from the scene.
Troopers said the driver left the road, crashed into an embankment and rolled the vehicle onto the driver’s side. The driver, though, fled from the scene, according to the State Patrol.
Another northbound vehicle crashed into the van’s undercarriage.
The Shelton man, who was driving the second vehicle, sustained injuries and was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital.
The second vehicle’s passenger, the Port Angeles woman, was also hurt and was taken to Mason General Hospital.
Officers are investigating this collision.
Traffic accidents can happen in the blink of an eye — but their effects can last a lifetime. Every time you get behind the wheel, remember: staying alert and making safe choices can save lives. Avoid distractions, never drive under the influence, and always wear your seatbelt. Follow speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists who share the road with you.
Take that extra moment to look both ways and yield cautiously at intersections — sometimes, that one second of attention can prevent a serious or even life-threatening crash.
Even minor collisions can cause serious injuries and major traffic disruptions. Drivers should slow down near on-ramps and remain alert to changing traffic conditions to help prevent crashes.
