Firefighter Injured in Crash on Interstate 5 in South King

FEDERAL WAY, WA (September 22, 2025) — A firefighter and another individual are recovering after a crash on Interstate 5 involving a sedan and a fire truck, parked at the scene of an earlier DUI rollover crash on southbound Interstate 5.

The incident occurred around 6 a.m. Sunday morning in South King County, as emergency crews were responding to the initial crash. 

According to the Washington State Patrol, the driver of the sedan reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel before striking the parked fire engine near Federal Way.

One firefighter was seated in the driver’s seat of the fire truck at the time of impact and sustained minor injuries. 

Both the firefighter and the sedan driver were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.

Officials confirmed that the fire engine suffered significant damage and will remain out of service until repairs are completed. 

No arrests were made, and there are no indications of criminal behavior at this time.

Authorities are using this incident as a reminder of the dangers of drowsy driving. “We want to make sure that people understand drowsy driving is, you know, dangerous—if not just as dangerous as impaired driving,” said WSP Trooper Rick Johnson.
