Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Highway 550 in Ouray

Ouray, CO (August 5, 2025) – Two people died and one sustained injuries in a solo vehicle crash on Highway 550.

A devastating crash on Red Mountain Pass on Tuesday morning claimed the lives of two adults and left a young girl in the hospital after a harrowing rescue effort.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, around 8 a.m., a Honda Civic traveling along Highway 550 near milepost 88—just south of Ouray—veered off the roadway and plunged down the steep mountainside.

The vehicle rolled approximately 320 feet before coming to rest upside down in the river below.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, the two adults were pronounced dead at the scene. 

A young girl, trapped in the wreckage, endured several hours before rescuers could safely free her from the vehicle. She was then transported to a nearby hospital for medical care.

The Colorado State Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to investigators to contact CSP Dispatch at 970-249-4392.
