2 Dead in Buna Auto Accident on US Highway 96 near County Road 791

BUNA, TX (April 20, 2025) – Friday night, 2 people died in a brutal head-on crash on US Highway 96 near County Road 791.

Reports said that the incident occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 96, near County Road 791, near Buna.

A 2023 Hyundai Elantra heading north crossed the center median and collided head-on with a 2024 Kia Sportage, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Hyundai driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Their name hasn’t been released yet, but it is pending next of kin notification.

The Kia’s driver was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. A child passenger in the Kia died at the scene.

Highway 96’s southbound lanes were shut down for an unknown period. Multiple emergency crews responded, and DPS is leading the investigation.
