Head-On Crash West of Cañon City Leaves Two Seriously Injured, Driver Arrested

Cañon City, CO (June 19, 2025) — A head-on collision on Highway 50 west of Cañon City left two people with serious injuries and led to the arrest of an 18-year-old driver on Monday afternoon.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash happened around 1:20 p.m. near milepost 262. Investigators believe the driver of a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 was traveling eastbound and passing multiple vehicles in a designated passing zone. Authorities said the driver continued passing as the roadway entered a no-passing zone, resulting in a head-on collision with a westbound 2024 Jeep Wrangler.

The 43-year-old man driving the Jeep and a 50-year-old female passenger both suffered serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. The Silverado driver sustained minor injuries and also received medical treatment.

Troopers arrested the Silverado driver and charged him with vehicular assault and reckless driving.

The Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate the crash and is seeking witnesses or dashcam footage that may show the vehicles’ movements before the collision.

Let Us Practice Defensive Driving

Did you know that there are plenty of ways to practice safe and defensive driving? Doing them will make you safe from accidents.

Practicing safe and defensive driving is crucial because it reduces the risk of accidents and helps protect both yourself and other drivers on the road. Following traffic rules, maintaining a safe distance, and being aware of your surroundings can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents, and ensure a safer driving experience.

Unsafe passing maneuvers can have devastating consequences, especially on two-lane highways. Drivers should obey no-passing zones and exercise patience to help prevent serious crashes and injuries.
