Phoenix, AZ (May 28, 2025) – Two people sustained injuries in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 51 on Wednesday.

Drivers in north Phoenix faced more headaches when a car fire during rush hour forced a partial closure of a major freeway.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, two vehicles collided around 4 p.m., prompting authorities to shut down the southbound lanes of State Route 51 between Cactus Road and Shea Boulevard. 

One of the vehicles caught fire after the crash.

Emergency responders transported two individuals to the hospital, though the severity of their injuries remains unknown.

ADOT traffic cameras captured crews towing the burned vehicle to the shoulder and cleaning debris from the roadway. 

Officials reopened the southbound lanes shortly before 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, traffic in the northbound lanes continued unaffected.
