Police Investigate Crash on U.S 71 on East 19th Street in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (August 7, 2026)— A motorcyclist and passenger suffered serious injuries after their motorcycle rear-ended a car during a morning rush-hour traffic crash on U.S. 71 near downtown Kansas City.

According to the Kansas City Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 near East 19th Street.

Officer Jhanelle Cole said a preliminary investigation determined that the motorcyclist and passenger were traveling north on a Honda Gold Wing when the motorcycle struck the rear of a black Ford Fusion that had stopped in traffic.

Emergency crews transported both people on the motorcycle to a hospital with serious injuries. Police later said they remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Ford Fusion did not suffer injuries in the collision.

The crash caused significant traffic disruptions during the morning commute. The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District reported shortly before 8 a.m. that three left lanes were closed beyond East 22nd Street.

Approximately 55 minutes later, two left lanes remained closed while crews continued working at the scene. MoDOT reported that all lanes had reopened by approximately 9:15 a.m.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Injured in a Kansas City Motorcycle Accident?

A serious motorcycle collision can leave riders and passengers facing a difficult and uncertain recovery. Unlike occupants of enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists have very little protection from the forces involved in a crash.

Even when a collision occurs at lower speeds or in congested traffic, riders may suffer significant injuries that require hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation, or extended time away from work.

At Sweet Lawyers, we understand how quickly a motorcycle accident can disrupt nearly every part of a person’s life. Injured riders and their families may suddenly face mounting medical expenses, lost income, transportation problems, insurance questions, and concerns about whether the injuries will affect their long-term health or ability to work.

Motorcycle crashes can involve many contributing factors. Investigators may examine traffic conditions, following distance, roadway design, visibility, driver actions, vehicle positioning, braking patterns, and other evidence to determine how a collision occurred.

In heavy rush-hour traffic, sudden stops and reduced space between vehicles can create additional hazards for everyone on the roadway.

After a serious crash, preserving information may help establish a clearer picture of the incident and its impact. Medical records, police reports, photographs, witness information, insurance correspondence, repair estimates, and documentation of missed work can all provide important context.

Every accident is different, however, and responsibility should be evaluated based on the specific facts and available evidence.

Sweet Lawyers assists motorcyclists, passengers, and families affected by serious traffic collisions. Our team recognizes that recovering from a significant injury can be physically painful, emotionally exhausting, and financially stressful.

We are committed to providing compassionate communication and helping injured individuals better understand the options that may be available to them.
