2-Vehicle Crash on State Route 9 Kills Man

70-Year-Old Deming Man Killed in SR9 Collision Near Van Zandt

Van Zandt, WA (May 6, 2025) — On Saturday, a 70-year-old man from Deming lost his life following a two-vehicle crash on State Route 9 near Van Zandt, Washington.

Authorities reported the man was driving a Kymco off-road vehicle northbound just after noon when he attempted to make a left turn into a residence. As he crossed the southbound lane, a 16-year-old girl from Deming approached in a 2009 Kia Sportage traveling south. The SUV struck the off-road vehicle during the turn.

The impact forced the off-road vehicle onto the northbound shoulder, where it came to rest. The man died at the scene. Investigators noted he was not wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet.

Emergency crews transported the teenage driver to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham with injuries.

Officials determined the crash resulted from failure to yield the right of way. They also confirmed that drugs and alcohol did not contribute to the incident.
