SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 28, 2026) — A 2-year-old child died Friday night after a vehicle struck the child and an adult in a crash at 4th Street and Channel Street, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Officers responded to reports of a crash involving two pedestrians near 4th and Channel streets around 8:55 p.m. on Feb. 27. When officers arrived, they found an adult and a toddler who had been hit by a vehicle while crossing the roadway.

Emergency responders transported both pedestrians to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, doctors pronounced the 2-year-old deceased. The adult, identified in a public statement by city officials as the child’s mother, suffered injuries in the collision.

Authorities reported that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Police stated that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie issued a statement Saturday evening expressing heartbreak over the tragic loss and extending condolences to the family. He also thanked first responders and emphasized the city’s commitment to improving street safety for families.
