Man Seriously Injured in Three-Vehicle Pettis County Crash
Pettis County, MO (August 15, 2026) — On Thursday morning, a 69-year-old Smithton man suffered serious injuries after a three-vehicle crash on Highway 50 in Pettis County, Missouri.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the collision around 10:45 a.m. on Highway 50 at Arator Road. The man was driving a Toyota Corolla that had stopped to make a left turn when a RAM 1500 struck it from behind. The impact pushed both vehicles off the roadway, while debris struck a nearby Honda Ridgeline.
Paramedics transported the injured Smithton man to University Hospital. The 89-year-old RAM driver suffered minor injuries and went to Bothwell Regional Health Center. The Honda driver, a 67-year-old Bonner Springs, Kansas, man, escaped injury.
Authorities reported that the Toyota and RAM sustained major damage, while the Honda suffered minor damage.
Distracted driving is one of the most common—and most preventable—causes of traffic collisions. It includes anything that takes your attention away from the road, such as texting or talking on your phone, eating or drinking, adjusting the radio, using a navigation system, or even talking to passengers. When your focus shifts away from driving, even for a moment, the risk of a serious crash increases dramatically.
Texting while driving is especially dangerous. Reading or sending a text can take your eyes off the road for about five seconds. At highway speeds, that’s enough time to travel the length of a football field without looking—more than enough for a devastating accident to occur.
Safe driving requires your full attention at all times. Any non-driving activity, no matter how small it seems, can become a deadly distraction. Staying focused behind the wheel protects not only you but also your passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone else on the road.
If you suffer injuries in a crash, seek medical attention promptly and document the incident. Understanding your legal rights can also help protect you during recovery.
