Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Interstate 70 in Elbert County

Elbert County, Co (July 2, 2025) – On Wednesday afternoon, a tragic crash on Interstate 70 west of Limon claimed the lives of three people.

Troopers reported that the collision occurred near mile marker 348, when a Subaru Forester, traveling eastbound, struck the rear of a semi-truck hauling a trailer. 

The impact caused the Subaru to spin out and roll. Inside the vehicle were four individuals—all from Montana. 

Sadly, a 47-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy died at the scene. The driver, a man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators stated that the semi-truck was traveling slowly in the right lane, partially on the shoulder, with its hazard lights activated. 

The Subaru collided with the back of the trailer, leading to the fatal sequence of events. While the Subaru was destroyed in the crash, the semi-truck came to a stop straddling the right lane and shoulder.

The truck driver was not injured.

Initially, authorities believed four people had died, but they later confirmed that three fatalities occurred, with four occupants total in the Subaru.

Due to the severity of the crash, the Colorado Department of Transportation closed the eastbound lanes of I-70 at Exit 316 (US 36/Byers) for several hours. 

Crews worked throughout the afternoon to investigate and clear the scene, and they reopened the highway later Wednesday evening.
