Police Investigate Deadly Crash on Interstate 55 in Jefferson County

Jefferson County, MO (September 28, 2025) – A chain reaction crash on Interstate 55 involving eight vehicles killed three people and injured several others Sunday afternoon near Highway 61.

According to Sgt. Andrew Gadberry of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 3:30 p.m. when a tractor-trailer driver failed to notice slowed traffic in the northbound lanes. 

The truck slammed into the vehicles ahead, triggering a deadly multi-car pileup.

MSHP confirmed that a man and a woman from Memphis, Tennessee, and a woman from Pevely died in the crash. 

Four additional people suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. The tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries.

The crash closed both directions of I-55 for several hours. Authorities reopened the southbound lanes at about 8:20 p.m., and northbound lanes reopened around 10:20 p.m.

MSHP’s Major Crash Investigation Unit continues to investigate the collision.
