Three Teens Injured in Rollover Crash on Mount Baker Highway in Whatcom County

Whatcom County, CA (July 30, 2026) — Three teenagers suffered injuries early Tuesday after a single-vehicle rollover crash on Mount Baker Highway in Whatcom County.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened around 12:50 a.m. near Hatchery Road.

Investigators said a 17-year-old Maple Falls driver was traveling eastbound in a 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, rolled over, and came to rest in a nearby field.

The driver, a 15-year-old passenger from Deming, and a 16-year-old passenger from Maple Falls were all wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Emergency responders transported all three to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities said drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the collision. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was declared a total loss. The crash temporarily closed both directions of State Route 542 before crews reopened the highway later that morning.

The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.

Let’s Avoid Traffic Accidents

Avoiding auto accidents involves paying attention and practicing safe driving methods. And as always, you should follow the speed and traffic laws, and don’t text (or use your phone in any way) behind the wheel.

Keep a safe trailing distance to be able to stop, if necessary.

Do not drink and drive, and never get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are tired.

Watch your mirrors and use your turn signals, and check your blind spots, before changing lanes or making a turn. Drive calmly and patiently, especially in heavy traffic or bad weather.

When you drive responsibly and remain alert, you help prevent accidents and keep everyone on the road safe.

Every driver has a responsibility to stay alert and avoid driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Making safe choices behind the wheel can help prevent serious crashes, protect passengers, and save lives.
