5-Car Crash on State Route 281 Injures 4 People [Grant County, WA]

Grant County, WA (July 15, 2026) — Four people suffered injuries after a five-vehicle crash on State Route 281 in Grant County Monday afternoon.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened around 5 p.m. about four miles north of George. Investigators said a northbound pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old Quincy man rear-ended a sedan that had stopped to make a left turn onto Road 4 Northwest.

The impact pushed the sedan into the southbound lanes, where it collided with or was sideswiped by three oncoming vehicles, resulting in a chain-reaction crash.

The sedan driver, the pickup driver, and two other motorists were injured. Emergency crews airlifted two of the victims to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, while another was transported by ambulance. The fourth injured driver traveled to a different hospital in a private vehicle.

Troopers determined the pickup driver caused the crash by following too closely, and charges are pending. Investigators have not yet determined whether impairment contributed to the collision. The crash closed both directions of the highway for several hours while crews cleared the scene.
