Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Highway 101 in San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA (September 23, 2026)— A 63-year-old woman died Monday night after she was struck while standing between two disabled vehicles following an earlier crash on Highway 101 in San Jose.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the woman was driving a Nissan Juke northbound on Highway 101 when she allegedly rear-ended a Toyota Prius south of Oakland Road.

The CHP said the Nissan driver exited her vehicle after the initial crash and stood between the Nissan and Prius while both vehicles remained disabled on the highway.

A third vehicle then struck the Nissan, causing it to pin the woman between her vehicle and the Prius, authorities said.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported the woman to a hospital. Despite medical efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

The CHP identified the victim only as a 63-year-old San Jose resident. Authorities had not released her name in the initial report.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Investigators said drugs and alcohol did not appear to have contributed to the crash.

The California Highway Patrol continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision as of Tuesday.

Fatal freeway collisions can involve a complex sequence of events, especially when an initial crash leaves vehicles disabled in active traffic lanes.

Investigators may examine the positions of the vehicles, lighting and visibility, traffic conditions, driver actions, vehicle speeds, roadway design, and the timing of each impact to better understand how the incident occurred.

When a person dies in a traffic collision, surviving family members may also face unexpected financial and administrative burdens.

Funeral and burial expenses, insurance matters, loss of financial support, and other consequences can add further stress during an already painful time.
