Man Injured After Grant PUD Maintenance Truck Runs Over Tarp Shelter Near Moses Lake

Moses Lake, WA (July 31, 2026) — On Monday, a 61-year-old man suffered injuries after a shocking accident near State Route 17 when a Grant PUD maintenance truck ran over him while he was sheltering beneath a tarp near Moses Lake.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on a service road running alongside State Route 17 between Randolph Road Northeast and Road G Northeast.

Investigators said the maintenance truck operator was spraying weeds when he noticed a tarp on the roadway. Believing it was discarded debris, the driver continued forward. After feeling the truck pass over an object and hearing someone cry out, the operator stopped and discovered the injured man beneath the tarp.

Emergency responders transported the man to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake for treatment. Authorities believe he was experiencing homelessness and using the tarp as shelter. Officials have not released details about the extent of his injuries, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Keeping the Road Safe is Everyone’s Responsibility

Be a defensive driver to prevent road accidents. Stay alert, maintain a safe distance, and always expect the unexpected. Avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and use your signals. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists. A proactive, cautious approach keeps everyone safer on the road. Drive smart, drive safe!

Always remain alert for people or unexpected obstacles on or near roadways, especially in areas where individuals may seek shelter. Drivers should exercise caution, and anyone without safe housing should avoid resting in locations where they may not be visible to passing vehicles.
