Parents Raise Safety Concerns After Child Struck Near Sulphur Springs Community School
Santa Clarita, CA (May 24, 2025) — On Monday afternoon, a pedestrian accident on Lost Canyon Road left a young girl hurt, and parents in Canyon Country are calling for safety improvements near Sulphur Springs Community School.
The collision happened near Lost Canyon Road, where families frequently cross between the school and a dirt parking lot across the street. Witnesses said the child went underneath the vehicle after being hit. Emergency crews transported her to a hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses, the girl and her father were crossing outside the marked crosswalk when a truck leaving the dirt parking lot struck her while turning toward Sand Canyon Road. Witnesses said the vehicle did not appear to be traveling at a high speed.
The area has become a growing concern for parents because the nearby crosswalk is not staffed by a crossing guard during drop-off and pickup hours. Several parents said traffic congestion, limited parking, and the distance to other marked crossings led many families to jaywalk to reach the school on time.
Parents also pointed to previous traffic incidents in the same area and urged the city, school district, and developers to improve pedestrian safety before another serious crash occurs.
City officials said discussions about additional traffic and safety measures have already been underway with the school district and Vista Canyon developer JSB Development. Proposed improvements include traffic control measures and possible crossing guard studies.
Stop Pedestrian Accidents
To help avoid pedestrian accidents, drivers and pedestrians alike should be increasingly vigilant and watch out for each other. Drivers have to make sure to slow down in crowded areas, watch for people crossing and not get distracted, like by texting.
Pedestrians should cross only where they are supposed to, heed the traffic lights and attempt to establish eye contact with drivers before they step off the curb. If you’re walking at night, wear something bright or reflective so you’re easier to see. Do not walk and use a phone, or wear headphones, on the road.
School zones can become dangerous during busy pickup and drop-off hours. Drivers should slow down, stay alert for children crossing unexpectedly, and follow all traffic controls. Parents and local officials should also work together to improve pedestrian safety around schools to help prevent future tragedies.
A Personal Injury Claim Could Help
A personal injury case is critical after a car accident, especially when there is an injured party caused by another driver’s carelessness. Automobile accidents can lead to painful physical injuries, emotional distress and financial ruin. Medical expenses, lost income, and expenses for long term recovery don’t take long to add up. One option for reaching a fair resolution to these damages is a personal injury lawsuit.
Filing a court action holds the wrongdoer accountable. It also forces insurance providers to offer a reasonable settlement, rather than a low-ball offer that may not be enough to cover all of your losses. In too many instances, the insurers who shouldn’t be in the business of trying to maximize their profits often look for ways to minimize their payouts. And your rights will be protected with the personal injury claim throughout this process.
Also, in a personal injury lawsuit, you may be able to recover noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering or loss of enjoyment of life. It’s often no less important than your medical bills. In suing, you also encourage safer driving by reinforcing the accountability of reckless or negligent drivers.
If you do retain an experienced personal injury lawyer, the case is likely to proceed much more smoothly and not only will you be led through the legal process, you will likely have a better chance of a positive outcome as well.
