Texas DPS Pursuit Ends in Canal Crash; Driver Faces Multiple Charges
Hudspeth County, TX (July 18, 2026) — A high-speed pursuit involving the Texas Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Border Patrol ended Wednesday morning when Adrian Leonardo Sandoval crashed into a canal in Hudspeth County.
According to DPS, a trooper attempted to stop a red Jeep on Interstate 10 at approximately 6:33 a.m. after identifying the driver as 31-year-old Adrian Leonardo Sandoval. Instead of stopping, Sandoval allegedly sped away, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.
Investigators said Sandoval drove on the improved shoulder to pass other vehicles and struck another vehicle during the pursuit.
The chase ended after the Jeep crashed into a canal near North Loop Drive and Bauman Road in Socorro. First responders rescued Sandoval from the canal and took a female passenger to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details about her condition.
DPS arrested Sandoval and charged him with evading arrest or detention causing serious bodily injury, reckless driving, failure to stop and render aid, and human smuggling.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the incident.
