1 Person Hospitalized after Alarming Single-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 and Highway 299 [Arcata, CA]

Injuries Reported in Arcata Auto Accident on Highway 101 and Highway 299

ARCATA, CA (May 26, 2026) – Early Sunday morning, an alarming single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 and Highway 299 sent 1 person to the hospital.

The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Highway 101 northbound at the Highway 299 interchange.

A red SUV rolled over and came to rest on the right shoulder, according to scanner traffic. A reporting party associated with the vehicle was trying to flag down help when another caller reported that a passenger was still trapped inside.

A witness said the driver briefly spoke with someone in a white van before leaving the scene. It is unclear whether they left to seek help or medical attention. The passenger remained trapped in the vehicle, according to the report.

Multiple agencies responded, including Arcata Fire District, Blue Lake Fire Department, Arcata Police Department, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and California Department of Transportation.

CHP logs noted about 30 feet of guardrail damage. One occupant was treated at St. Joseph Hospital and reported in stable condition with a major scalp laceration. The condition of the other occupant was not immediately known.

Caltrans cleared the scene, and the roadway fully reopened around 5:45 a.m. The vehicle was later towed. The incident was upgraded to a major injury collision at about 7:11 a.m.
