Ephrata Man Killed in Head-On DUI Crash on SR 283 Near George
George, WA (January 20, 2026) — A fatal head-on collision on State Route 283 Sunday evening claimed the life of 53-year-old Alejandro Cartagena Hernandez of Ephrata and led to DUI-related charges against another driver in Grant County.
The Washington State Patrol reported that the crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on State Route 283 at White Trail Road, about seven miles northeast of George. Hernandez was driving northbound when a pickup traveling south crossed the centerline and struck his vehicle head-on.
Authorities pronounced Cartagena Hernandez dead at the scene from his injuries. The other driver, 39-year-old Gerardo Silva Diaz of Quincy, suffered injuries and was taken to Quincy Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators determined that intoxicating substances played a role in the collision. Authorities closed the highway for approximately four hours while crews worked at the scene. Silva Diaz now faces a charge of vehicular homicide.
