Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash on West Rio Grande in El Paso

El Paso, TX (February 4, 2026) – 57-year-old Arturo Frias Moreno died in a crash on West Rio Grande on Wednesday afternoon, February 4, according to El Paso police.

Officers with the Special Traffic Investigations unit responded just before 5 p.m. to the 300 block of West Rio Grande following reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. 

Police initially reported the collision occurred near Yandell Drive and Los Angeles Drive, but later clarified the location.

Investigators said a 31-year-old man was driving westbound on Rio Grande when a pedestrian entered the roadway. 

Police identified the pedestrian as 57-year-old Arturo Frias Moreno. 

Authorities stated Moreno crossed in front of the vehicle and was not using a designated crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The vehicle struck Moreno, causing severe injuries. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Officials noted that this crash marks the sixth traffic-related fatality in El Paso this year, compared to five at the same point last year.
