39-Year-Old Man Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle While Crossing Sunshine Street in Springfield

Springfield, MO (March 10, 2026) — on Saturday night, 39-year-old Benson Mahan later died after a pedestrian crash on Sunshine Street.

Authorities say that the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on March 7 near Zimmer Road in Springfield.

According to investigators, a minivan was traveling eastbound on Sunshine Street when Mahan attempted to cross the road southbound outside of a designated crosswalk. The vehicle struck him during the crossing.

Emergency responders transported Mahan to a hospital with serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, officials confirmed on March 8 that he died from those injuries.

The fatal collision marks Springfield’s fourth traffic-related death of 2026. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
