Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Hit-And-Run Crash in East Riverside [Austin, TX]

Jose Alberto Torres Arrested After Hit-And-Run Crash in East Riverside 

Austin, TX (August 26, 2025) – A bicyclist sustained injuries in a hit-and-run crash in East Riverside.

Austin police arrested a man over the weekend after he allegedly ran over a bicyclist with a stolen truck and led officers on a high-speed, seven-minute chase spanning nearly seven miles through East Riverside.

Authorities identified the suspect as 34-year-old Jose Alberto Torres, who now faces multiple charges, including:

• One count of second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  
• One count of third-degree felony evading arrest/detention with a vehicle
  
• One count of state-jail felony unauthorized use of a vehicle
  

The incident began early Sunday morning in the 2300 block of the westbound service road of E. SH 71. 

Responding officers found a severely injured bicyclist suffering from leg fractures and abrasions, holding a license plate that had reportedly fallen off the truck that hit him. 

His bicycle lay nearby with a bent rear wheel and a tire-marked shirt.

The victim recalled riding his bike when the truck abruptly struck him from behind, launching him in front of the vehicle. 

The driver fled the scene but returned moments later, appearing to aim for the bicyclist again.

Fortunately, a second truck intervened, allowing the victim to hobble away.

A witness from the second truck told officers she saw the Dodge Ram intentionally turning back toward the injured man and parked between them to block further harm. 

Surveillance footage confirmed the Dodge accelerated toward the bicyclist, jumped a curb, and drove over him before fleeing.

Soon after, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office reported the Dodge Ram had been stolen overnight from a home in Manor. 

Using Sirius XM tracking, the truck’s owner located it in East Austin. 

Police initiated a traffic stop, but Torres fled, leading officers on a pursuit before they disabled the vehicle and took him into custody.

Authorities confirmed Torres matched witness descriptions and surveillance footage. He remains in Travis County Jail on a $50,000 bond and is due in court on September 9. 

Records show he has an extensive criminal history in Travis County dating back to 2009.
