Big Rig Accident on Highway 160 Injures 2 People [Navajo, AZ]

Two Injured in Crash Involving Uranium Transport Truck Near Shonto

Navajo, AZ (May 13, 2025) — The Navajo Police Department responded to a big rig accident on Highway 160 involving a semi-truck carrying uranium material.

According to authorities, the frightening incident happened near Shonto, Arizona, about a half-mile east of U.S. Highway 160 and Route 98.

Authorities said two people involved in the crash suffered injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the uranium transport truck was not hurt.

Investigators determined the semi-truck was traveling from Tuba City to the White Mesa Mill in Blanding, Utah, when the crash occurred. According to preliminary findings, an SUV attempted to pass another semi-truck and struck the front passenger-side tire area of the uranium transport vehicle while trying to overtake both trucks.

Following the collision, the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency worked with safety officials from the Pinyon Plain Mine to inspect the crash site. Crews tested the roadway, nearby ground, air levels, and the transport vehicle for possible contamination.

Officials confirmed the secured uranium cargo container remained intact and no hazardous material leaked during the incident. Environmental specialists also collected samples and completed radiation checks in the surrounding area, which showed no signs of contamination.

The Kayenta Police District continues to investigate the crash.

Let’s Drive Safer Together

Every time you drive, you’re part of something bigger—a shared space where everyone depends on each other to stay safe. That’s why being a responsible driver matters. Staying alert, following traffic rules, and showing courtesy on the road can go a long way in preventing accidents and protecting lives.

Safe driving isn’t just about you. It’s about your passengers, the people in other vehicles, and even pedestrians you may never meet. When we all make the effort to slow down, stay focused, and avoid distractions, we create safer roads for everyone.

One simple habit can make a huge difference: wearing your seatbelt. It only takes a second, but it can save your life. Whether you’re in the driver’s seat or riding along, make it a non-negotiable part of every trip.

Be especially careful around vehicles stopped on the side of the road, particularly on highways or in low-visibility conditions. Reduce your speed, stay aware of your surroundings, and move over when you can. These precautions help prevent further accidents and keep everyone safer.

Passing multiple vehicles on highways can create dangerous conditions and increase the risk of serious crashes. Drivers should use caution, allow enough visibility and space, and avoid risky passing maneuvers to help keep everyone safe on the road.
