2 People Dead in National City Auto Accident on State Route 54 and Interstate 5

NATIONAL CITY, CA (April 1, 2026) – Sunday morning, a brutal 2-vehicle crash on State Route 54 and Interstate 5 killed two people.

The incident happened at around 1:00 a.m. on State Route 54 and Interstate 5.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Volkswagen EOS rear-ended a Jeep Liberty for still unknown reasons. Then, the force of the crash pushed the Jeep to crash into the Sweetwater River below.

Moreover, responders extricated the two occupants of the Jeep, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Furthermore, officers arrested the driver of the Volkswagen on suspicion of driving under the influence.

At this time, the events leading to the crash remained unclear. When additional information becomes available, the public will be notified.

Due to limited information, the CHP continued investigating the crash.
