Deadly Hector Multi-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 40 near Desert Oasis Rest Area

HECTOR, CA (April 19, 2026) – Friday night, a brutal multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Desert Oasis Rest Area led to fatality.

The incident happened on April 17 at about 6:54 p.m. on the westbound Interstate 40 near Desert Oasis Rest Area.

Initial reports described a collision involving multiple semi-trucks, with early entries indicating two to three big rigs and at least one person down in the roadway.

By 7:04 p.m., responders said three semis were involved, with one truck fully engulfed in flames. At that time, only two individuals had been located. Crews also reported the fire spreading into nearby brush, with heavy smoke reducing visibility and affecting traffic in both directions.

At 7:53 p.m., the California Highway Patrol requested the coroner and notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, confirming the crash was fatal.

Around 8:00 p.m., CHP Barstow issued a traffic alert stating that Interstate 40 eastbound and westbound near the Desert Oasis Rest Area was fully closed due to the crash.

Authorities said the closure would remain in place while crews worked to put out the fire and clear the scene, warning of major delays and possible westbound detours.

By 8:19 p.m., logs showed eastbound lanes had reopened. Fire crews also requested heavy equipment, including loaders, to assist with extinguishing the fire and removing debris.

No information about the victim or victims has been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
