Brutal Rear-End Crash on San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

1 Dead in Hayward Auto Accident on Sam Mateo-Hayward Bridge

HAYWARD, CA (January 21, 2026) – Tuesday afternoon, a person died in a brutal rear-end crash on San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

The incident happened just before 3:00 p.m. on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

All three westbound lanes were blocked following the crash.

The California Highway Patrol said a silver sedan was stalled in a traffic lane when it was rear-ended by a white van with Rooter Hero plumbing branding. The sedan’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the van was taken to a hospital.

CHP said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision.

Westbound traffic was diverted onto Clawiter Road in Hayward. Vehicles already on the bridge west of Clawiter were turned around and sent eastbound in the westbound lanes toward the toll plaza. As of 3:37 p.m., CHP said an estimated reopening time for the westbound lanes was not available.
