2 People Dead in Phoenix Boat Accident near Topock Gorge and Lake Havasu

PHOENIX, AZ (April 9, 2026) – Tuesday afternoon, Noah Welch and James Rutherford Jr were killed in a brutal river boat crash near Topock Gorge.

The incident happened at around 4:50 p.m. near Topock Gorge and Lake Havasu.

According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, a boat traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a rock shoreline.

Moreover, responders pronounced one person dead at the scene. Then, paramedics airlifted one person to a hospital, where the patient was later pronounced dead.

Furthermore, authorities identified the two deceased individuals as 33-year-old Noah Welch and 53-year-old James Rutherford Jr.

At this time, the events leading to the crash remained unclear. When additional information becomes available, the public will be notified.

Due to limited information, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating the crash.
