Ford SUV Driver Bryan Ortiz Dead in Highway 1 DUI Crash

Driver Arrested in Following Deadly Crash South of Springfield Road

Monterey County, CA (April 7, 2026) – 22-year-old Bryan Ortiz of Castroville sustained fatal injuries following a Highway 1 DUI crash Saturday.

It was past midnight when the deadly crash happened south of Springfield Road.

Investigators determined that a San Jose man was driving a northbound BMW sedan on the highway when he crossed into the southbound lane and crashed head-on onto a Ford SUV.

Ortiz who was driving the Ford SUV died in the collision.

Moreover, the 25-year-old man driving the BMW, a 24-year-old male passenger, and another male passenger, were all from San Jose. Officers said the BMW driver and one of the passengers tried to flee on foot, but were later found hiding near a pond on Struve Road.

The BMW driver and the 24-year-old passenger incurred major injuries, and the other male passenger was moderately injured. They were all taken to an area hospital.

Additionally, the accident report stated that the authorities arrested the BMW driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter and hit-and-run, according to CHP.

Police asked anyone with information about the crash to call CHP at 831-796-2160.
