Bus Crash on State Highway 164 Results in Injuries [Groesbeck, TX]

Groesbeck, TX (July 2, 2026) — A Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison bus overturned Wednesday morning after a shocking crash on State Highway 164 near Groesbeck, leaving several inmates and a staff member injured.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. just east of FM 3371, about 40 miles east of Waco. According to investigators, the eastbound bus struck a guardrail before overturning.

The bus was transporting 26 inmates from county jails to the Gurney Unit in Palestine. Three Texas Department of Criminal Justice staff members were also on board.

Authorities said several occupants suffered injuries. Reports indicate that five inmates and one staff member were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while earlier reports stated that seven inmates were transported. Officials said none of the reported injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Emergency crews temporarily closed both directions of State Highway 164 while they responded to the scene. Authorities confirmed that all inmates and staff were accounted for, and no escapes happened.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
