Chico Motorcyclist Cameron Phillips Killed in DUI Crash on Esplanade
Chico, CA (March 6, 2026) — On Wednesday evening, a motorcycle crash on Esplanade claimed the life of 34-year-old Cameron Phillips of Chico, after a driver allegedly turned into his path while under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities say that the collision happened around 6:45 p.m. in the 3000 block of Esplanade. Officers arrived to find Phillips lying in the roadway after the crash.
Bystanders immediately began performing life-saving efforts before emergency crews arrived. Paramedics transported Phillips to a nearby hospital, but despite medical care, he later died from his injuries.
Investigators determined Phillips had been riding his motorcycle when a vehicle driven by 40-year-old Orlando Gomez-Ventura turned directly into his path, causing the initial collision. After Phillips was thrown into the roadway, another passing vehicle struck him.
Both drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. During the investigation, officers determined that Gomez-Ventura was under the influence of alcohol. Police arrested him and booked him into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
The crash remains under investigation.
