Police Investigate 8-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Crash on Northbound Interstate 15
CAJON PASS, CA (May 21, 2026) — An eight-vehicle chain-reaction crash on northbound Interstate 15 caused major delays Thursday morning in the Cajon Pass.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the pileup happened around 6:06 a.m. on May 21, 2026, about two miles before the Oak Hill Road exit.
CHP said the crash blocked the fast lane and the No. 2 lane. Investigators believe blinding sunlight and speed may have contributed to the initial collision.
Officials also said the first crash may have involved a disabled vehicle or a slow-moving vehicle in one of the traffic lanes.
After the first impact, several other vehicles collided in a chain reaction. CHP said about eight vehicles were involved in the main pileup.
Five additional vehicles were involved in secondary crashes as traffic backed up near the scene.
Officials stopped traffic while crews cleaned up debris and removed damaged vehicles from the lanes.
Authorities have not yet released information about possible injuries.
The California Highway Patrol’s Inland Office is investigating the crash and will release more details when its preliminary accident report becomes available.
Injured in a Cajon Pass Multi-Vehicle Crash? Sweet Lawyers Can Help
A chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles can leave drivers and passengers facing confusion, stress, vehicle damage, and possible injuries.
When eight vehicles collide on a busy freeway and additional secondary crashes happen as traffic backs up, it can be difficult to determine what caused the crash and who may be responsible.
Even when injury details are not immediately available, victims should take their health seriously and watch for symptoms that may appear later.
At Sweet Lawyers, we understand how overwhelming freeway pileups can be. Multi-vehicle crashes often involve several insurance companies, conflicting statements, and complex questions about speed, following distance, visibility, roadway hazards, disabled vehicles, and driver reaction time.
When blinding sunlight may have contributed to a crash, investigators may also examine glare, traffic flow, lane position, and whether drivers adjusted their speed for conditions.
Our team helps injured accident victims protect their rights after serious roadway collisions. We assist with reviewing CHP reports, gathering evidence, communicating with insurance companies, and helping clients understand their legal options.
Important evidence may include crash scene photos, witness statements, vehicle damage, roadway debris, dash camera footage, traffic camera video, medical records, and towing reports.
If you or someone you love suffered injuries in a freeway pileup, you may be able to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, rehabilitation, property damage, and other accident-related losses.
Insurance companies may try to minimize injuries or shift blame among drivers, but experienced legal guidance can help ensure your claim is handled properly.
