Driver Arrested After Solo Vehicle DUI Crash on Lyons Bald Mountain Road in Sonora
SONORA, CA (November 20, 2025) — A Sonora man is facing felony charges after a crash on Lyons Bald Mountain Road while allegedly driving under the influence — with an 8-year-old child in the back seat.
Authorities with the California Highway Patrol responded to the incident, which occurred on Lyons Bald Mountain Road, east of Apple Valley Road, when 43-year-old Cabino Valdez veered off the road and crashed his 2025 Subaru Outback into a ditch.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the vehicle had sustained damage in a solo-vehicle crash.
Inside the Subaru, officers found Valdez and an 8-year-old child, both wearing seatbelts.
Both occupants reportedly suffered minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.
During their investigation, CHP officers determined that Valdez was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
He was subsequently arrested for felony DUI and child abuse with potential for great bodily injury — serious charges that carry significant legal consequences under California law.
The safety of child passengers in DUI-related crashes is a growing concern across the state.
This incident highlights the grave danger impaired drivers pose not only to themselves but to vulnerable passengers — especially children.
