Christine Dunn of Winthrop Injured in US 97A Fatal Crash [Chelan, WA]

Chelan, WA (May 25, 2024) – A motorcycle passenger, 60-year-old Christine Dunn of Winthrop, was injured following a US 97A fatal crash Thursday afternoon.

It was before 5 p.m. when 59-year-old Wilhelm Penders, also of Winthrop, was driving his motorcycle north on the highway. Officers said he tried to pass another vehicle using the southbound lane.

The motorcycle collided head-on with a southbound Nissan 350Z driven by 32-year-old Marcos Huerta of Chelan at the SR 971 junction.

The impact of the collision ejected Penders and his passenger, Dunn, from the motorcycle.

Penders was transported to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee and was declared deceased.

The medical rescuers airlifted Dunn to a hospital. Huerta also sustained injuries and was transported to Central Washington Hospital.

WSP officer said unsafe passing played a role, though, it’s unknown if DUI contributed to the fatal collision.
