Police Investigate Fatal Crash Near Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, CA (August 13, 2026)— One person died, and another suffered minor injuries after a car plunged off a cliff into the ocean early Thursday morning after a crash near Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department.

The incident happened at approximately 12:50 a.m. along West Cliff Drive, just north of Steamer Lane and near Parking Lot C at Lighthouse Field State Beach.

Emergency dispatchers received 911 calls reporting that a vehicle had gone over the cliff.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department sent all five of its units to the scene, including four engines, a ladder truck, and a battalion chief. Crews from Central Fire and Scotts Valley Fire districts also responded, along with the Santa Cruz Police Department.

When firefighters arrived, they found that one occupant had escaped from the vehicle and told rescuers another person remained trapped inside the submerged car.

Rescue swimmers entered the ocean and located the second occupant inside the vehicle. Firefighters removed the person from the water and began life-saving measures while transporting the victim to a hospital.

Despite emergency medical efforts, the victim later died at the hospital.

The occupant who escaped from the vehicle suffered minor injuries, according to the Fire Department.

Santa Cruz police used a drone to search the surrounding water for any additional occupants. Fire Department rescue swimmers also searched the area and confirmed that no other victims were involved.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave West Cliff Drive and plunge over the cliff.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal crash remain under investigation.
