Harlingen, TX (March 10, 2026) — 17-year-old Cobretti Rodriguez died after a pedestrian crash on Expressway 83 in Harlingen.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of North Expressway 83. Police responded to reports of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle and found Rodriguez critically injured.

Authorities say that Rodriguez is a junior at San Benito High School and a member of the school’s Greyhound Athletic Program.

Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Rodriguez was remembered by the school community for the positive impact he had on those around him. In tribute to the student-athlete, officials announced that the scoreboard at Bobby Morrow Stadium would remain illuminated during memorial services.

Visitation services were scheduled at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home on Monday, with a rosary planned that evening. A funeral mass is set to take place Tuesday morning at St. Benedict Catholic Church.
