Six-Vehicle Crash on I-5 in Los Angeles Claims One Life, Injures Another
Los Angeles, CA (July 14, 2026) — A six-vehicle crash on the northbound Golden State (I-5) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles claimed the life of 61-year-old Garry Swanson. It injured another Tuesday morning, causing major traffic delays.
The collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. near Soto Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency crews also transported a second individual to a nearby hospital with injuries, although officials have not released the person’s condition.
The crash prompted officials to issue a SigAlert, shutting down all three lanes of the northbound I-5 transition road connecting the 5, 60, 10, and 101 freeways in Boyle Heights. The closure led to heavy traffic congestion, with backups stretching as far as Ditman Avenue.
Investigators continue to examine the cause of the multi-vehicle collision.
Sweet Lawyers extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Garry Swanson during this difficult time. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to the injured victim and hope the ongoing investigation provides answers and justice for everyone affected.
How a Wrongful Death Claim Can Help Families
The sudden loss of a loved one in a fatal traffic collision brings not only emotional pain but also unexpected financial challenges. Funeral expenses, medical bills, and lost income can quickly become overwhelming. A wrongful death claim can provide vital legal and financial support while holding the responsible party accountable.
Filing a wrongful death claim can help families recover compensation for:
- Funeral and burial costs
- Medical expenses related to the deceased’s final care
- Lost wages and future financial support
- Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
Whether the accident was caused by distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, or a defective vehicle, pursuing legal action ensures the at-fault party is held responsible. This process not only seeks justice for your loved one but can also raise awareness about dangerous behaviors that may prevent similar tragedies in the future.
While no amount of money can replace a loved one, a wrongful death claim can provide families with a sense of closure, knowing that accountability has been sought and justice pursued.
