Police Investigate Crash at Highway 50 and Justice Center Road in Cañon City

CAÑON CITY, CO (August 24, 2026)— A bicyclist died after suffering extensive injuries in a collision with a vehicle Sunday afternoon in a crash at Highway 50 and Justice Center Road in Cañon City, authorities said.

The Cañon City Police Department said officers responded to the intersection at approximately 2:45 p.m. following reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a bicycle rider.

When officers arrived, they found that the bicyclist had suffered what police described as extensive injuries.

Emergency personnel transported the rider to a hospital for treatment.

Police later confirmed that the bicyclist died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities initially withheld information about the death to allow family notifications to take place before publicly announcing the fatality.

Police said the Fremont County Coroner is responsible for releasing the bicyclist’s identity. Officials had not publicly identified the rider at the time of the latest update.

The Cañon City Police Department and Colorado State Patrol are jointly investigating the fatal collision.

Authorities have not released additional information about what caused the crash, the circumstances leading up to the impact, or whether any citations or charges may result.

The investigation remains active, and officials said they will release additional information as it becomes available.

Sweet Lawyers extends our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.

Compassionate Support for Families After a Fatal Bicycle Collision

The sudden loss of a loved one in a bicycle crash can bring profound grief, shock, and uncertainty. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the bicyclist who died after this collision in Cañon City.

A fatal crash can leave loved ones searching for answers while also coping with funeral arrangements, financial concerns, and the emotional weight of an unexpected loss.

Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles because they have very little protection from the force of an impact.

When a crash results in severe or fatal injuries, investigators may need to carefully examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, visibility, traffic controls, witness statements, physical evidence, surveillance footage, and other information to determine how the collision occurred.

In this case, the Cañon City Police Department and Colorado State Patrol continue to investigate the crash at Highway 50 and Justice Center Road.

Authorities have not yet announced what caused the collision or whether any party may bear responsibility. Until investigators complete their review, it is important to avoid assumptions about fault.

At Sweet Lawyers, we understand that wrongful death matters are deeply personal and emotionally difficult.

Families may find themselves handling insurance communications, medical bills, funeral expenses, accident reports, and other unexpected responsibilities while grieving. Those practical concerns can add significant stress during an already painful time.

Our team approaches families with compassion, patience, and respect. Sweet Lawyers focuses on listening carefully to each family’s concerns, reviewing the available information, and helping loved ones understand the services and resources that may be available based on their individual circumstances.

We believe grieving families deserve clear communication and personal attention without unnecessary pressure.

Fatal bicycle collisions can involve complicated questions about roadway design, driver and rider movements, lighting, visibility, and other circumstances.

A careful review of investigative findings and available records can help families develop a clearer understanding of what happened.
